At IFA 2020, Qualcomm officially announces the next generation of Snapdragon Computing chips in Berlin, Germany. The latest Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G offers improved performance, battery life, 5G networking, enhanced security, and AI capabilities over the previous-gen 8cx platform last year. On the output end, Qualcomm says the 8cx Gen 2 offers a system-wide efficiency boost of 50 percent, as well as better battery life.
In addition, the 8cx Gen 2 marks the second Compute platform of Qualcomm with 5G connectivity via both Sub-6 and mmWave. Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G allows multi-gigabit capacity and supports access to Wi-Fi 6.
The enhanced audio and camera experiences were another area of the 8cx Gen 2 which Qualcomm highlighted. The 8cx Gen 2 supports the 'Aqstic' echo cancelation and noise suppression (ECNS) tech by Qualcomm for audio. It allows your computer to focus intelligently on the environment and to reduce noise.
The 8cx Gen 2 as for the camera allows PCs to take advantage of high-resolution camera modules. The platform uses the Spectra image signal processor (ISP) from Qualcomm which supports up to 4 K HDR and up to the 32-megapixel camera. 8cx Gen 2 can make truly excellent video calls with laptops sporting hardware that makes full use of Spectra.
Qualcomm further notes that devices powered by the 8cx Gen 2 can support dual 4K displays to a dock via a single USB-C cable. The Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G includes Qualcomm's AI Engine which adds AI-powered features in video calls such as 'accelerated eye contact' and 'expressive avatars.' Finally, the new 8cx chip provides support for Microsoft Secure Core PC and Windows Hypervisor, which are integral IT administrator tools.
Qualcomm expects to release the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G in commercial devices in late 2020.
